My Favorite Site of 2006: Jumpcut
Here at SmileyBuzz, we're always looking to stay
on top of the latest trends on the web. That's how we've been able to introduce
to you the best free, web-based products at the exact right time...and the
summer 2006 launch of Zwinky proved to be no
exception.
With the explosion of YouTube over the past year, it was easy to predict that the Next Big Thing to come to the web might be a site that allows users to create their own video mash-ups. Rather than users editing their own videos using external software such as Adobe Premiere Elements to create their YouTube masterpiece, such a site would allow users to upload their video content onto the web - and then do all the editing (including adding effects, titles, cuts, etc.) right within the same web-based interface. For videophiles and wanna-be filmmakers like myself, such a website could amount to a dream come true.
That's why my Favorite Site of 2006 - Jumpcut - might be one just about ready to explode in the coming year. At first glance, Jumpcut is a lot like YouTube in that it highlights some of the most popular videos on its site, inviting site visitors to rate what they see. But the heart of the site is a video editor that allows users to upload their own video clips and then customize it however they wish using online tools...before publishing the final product for all to see.
Jumpcut has also offered users some really cool promotional contests this past year - inviting users to design a movie trailer for an independent film, and a promotional trailer for a new video game for the chance to win numerous prizes.
The coolest contest of all, however, might be the latest one they're offering: inviting users to create their own commercial video advertisements for Doritos - with the winning video being selected to be played as a TV commercial during the Super Bowl on February 4th.
So whether you're one of those annoying people who can't put the camcorder down at every family occasion, or constantly whipping out your video-enabled camera phone, or even the next Martin Scorsese...you'll want to break out the popcorn (or Doritos) and jump on over to Jumpcut to check out the latest in user-generated web cinema.
