If you don't have a calendar in front of you, you're probably not aware that today is Arbor Day - a holiday dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of planting and caring for trees. As Kevin correctly noted on SmileyBuzz just a few days ago, Arbor Day - much like Earth Day - gets very little respect from most people. But that doesn't mean that the cause and meaning behind the holiday should in any way be ignored.

As the National Arbor Day Foundation points out, planting trees can provide enormous environmental and energy-saving benefits in your community. Trees help remove carbon dioxide from the air and fight global warming in the process. They produce oxygen, which we need to breathe, and provide a natural habitat for birds. They also can help save homeowners money in energy costs in both warm and cold climates. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that the net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to running 10 room-size air conditioners for 20 hours a day. And during frigid winter months, trees help shield homes from cold winds, helping to reduce heating costs. Arbor Day 4-27

Wondering what you can do to help mark this important day? The Arbor Day Foundation has a few ideas for you. Here at SmileyBuzz headquarters, we contribute to the cause by designing free eCards for you to enjoy as part of My Fun Cards, our online greeting card product.

The more times you choose to send an eCard as opposed to a conventional paper greeting card, the less trees that will need to be cut down. And what better way to spread the word about the importance of trees than by sending a free Arbor Day eCard?

So embrace your inner tree-hugger today. Plant a tree, send an eCard, and help the planet in the process. Have a happy Arbor Day!
