Up
until about two months ago, I hardly ever watched TV; I had only viewed shows on
the Internet or via Netflix.
Lo and behold, American programming really is as bad as I thought! To wit,
network shows like Deal or No Deal,
American Idol, and even my guilty pleasure America's Next Top Model
entertain their viewers in a passive, lowest-common-denominator way. (Last
night, NBC's 30 Rock
did a great job of lampooning this phenomenon with a fictitious series called
MILF Island.)
So if you, too, are looking for a break from mindless game shows and reality television, check out these the best web-based comedy picks. With smart writing by their clever casts, these Internet series are worth watching.
• Clark and Michael: Arrested Development's Michael Cera cracks you up with short vignettes about young screenwriters living in L.A.
• UCB Comedy: The improv theater community co-founded by Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler brings you sketches and videos of live comedy performances.
• The 'Bu: A satire of The O.C., Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg and friends play angst-ridden teenagers who romp about Malibu.
• Funny or Die: This site hosts great comedy vids--many of which feature celebrities. My favorite will always be "The Landlord."
• Wainy Days: David Wain of the comedy group Stella writes and stars in this witty web sitcom.
